With four wickets in hand, Adam Zampa kept Pakistan to 305 runs as they chased a 368-run target. Babar Azam was removed on 18 after Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq shared a 134-run opening partnership. Australia had previously scored 367/9, led by centuries from Mitchell Marsh and David Warner.
TOSS: In the opening game of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and chose to bowl first against Australia.
Australia's batting unit hasn't performed well in the World Cup thus far, so captain Pat Cummins is hoping that his players will perform at their peak against Pakistan at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Despite the fact that only two Australian batsmen, Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh, have reached a fifty run score in the tournament thus far, Cummins was counting on the batsmen-friendly format. It's going to be a smaller field with high scoring, I dare say, especially at a venue like this one in Bangalore. This place always has excellent pitch. That being said, batting is very crucial. "I believe that the way the guys started the last game (against Sri Lanka) really set the tone," Cummins stated at the pre-game press conference on Thursday.
With hope that David Warner would also join the party soon, Cummins took heart from Marsh's fifty against Lanka. From the very first over, Mitchie and Davey took the game on. Our players should strive to achieve that. They are putting in a lot of effort at work. All of their actions are correct. Cummins remarked, "I'm sure there will be plenty of runs soon."
Inglis replacing the injured regular wicketkeeper Alex Carey made the premier pacer very happy. It's unfortunate that Alex hasn't experienced the last couple. Though Josh stepped up in the most recent game, which is fantastic, we know he's a class player," he remarked.
Despite the fact that Pakistan was humiliated by India at Ahmedabad, losing seven wickets in a row, Cummins was not prepared to take them lightly.
They appear to be a side that is constantly present. Some spin bowlers who can bowl 20 overs in an over, and some really good quick bowlers who can do some damage. Then they have, I believe, Rizwan, who tops the run-scoring chart, Babar Azim, who is always reliable, and a few other batsmen who have been scoring a lot of runs in ODIs lately. Thus, they're a strong side in almost every way," he continued.
Shaheen Afridi to Cummins, out Labuschagne made the catch! All over! Afridi, who is moving more slowly through the pitch, tries to pull through midwicket with a powerful pull, but Labuschagne makes an incredible catch in the deep. He pedals back and hangs onto a screamer with the reverse cup, but it was going fast and straight over his head. Australia ultimately prevails with a large margin. Cummins 10(8) [4s-2] c Labuschagne b Shaheen Afridi.
With just 36 runs scored, Pakistan has lost their last six wickets. With Iftikhar and Rizwan hitting form and 103 needed in 12 overs, they were right on the chase. Zampa, though, turned things around for Australia with a winning spell in the match. Earlier, when he got rid of Babar without giving much away, he was also brilliant. However, his final over was even more impressive as he had Rizwan and Iftikhar leg before wicket in back-to-back overs before getting Nawaz stumped to complete the victory. Following the opening stand of 134 between Shafique and Imam, the platform was established for Pakistan. Although neither of them was able to score as many runs as Warner and Marsh did earlier in the day, they set the stage for the other batters to follow on a pitch that remained extremely strong all day. The middle order, though, was unable to sufficiently advance the game. Although Rizwan, Iftikhar, and Shakeel all had some beautiful shots, Australia managed to take wickets consistently, mainly thanks to Zampa. Thus, it's their second straight victory as they recover well from a weak campaign opening. Hold on, the presentations are coming up soon.
David Warner | Player of the Match:
Right now, all I have is cramps in my groin, which is a little sore. The partnership with Marsh was fantastic; as soon as we figured out the pace of the wicket, we tried to take advantage of their bowlers. It is really satisfying for us to put on a performance like that outside. committing to and supporting my abilities: I hit the ball well yesterday; it was progressing nicely, and luck plays a big role when you're hitting the ball out of the middle. You have to take those chances when playing on a surface like this. merely to venture out and establish a collaboration with Mitch right now. We discussed aiming to bat for at least 35 overs and then likely scoring strongly thereafter. We lost five or six wickets in the final ten overs, so there is some room for improvement from our standpoint. Every run is important, and I've always run hard between the wickets. As long as I'm playing, I'll keep doing that as well. It's in my DNA.
Babar
We weren't as good with the ball as we thought. He won't spare you either if you fail to capture someone like Warner. Due to the large scoring area, the margin of error is extremely narrow. We owe the fast and spin bowlers all credit for how we were able to rally in the closing few overs. I tried to hit the stumps and the length, but that was all I did. The obvious message was that we can do it because we've done it before. The ball connected well in the light. No meaningful relationships could be formed by the middle overs. During the first 10 overs of the game, work on your bowling and during the middle overs, work on your batting.
Cummins
Fantastic victory. Chinnaswamy is a really difficult place to play, but fantastic win. Those two, Marsh and Warner, set the tone for the style of cricket we want to play. In ODI cricket, that is occasionally the issue. Sometimes it's difficult for the fresh batter after you make one breakthrough. When Stoin entered the picture, the pitch was hard-hit and led to the breakthrough. Zampa presented to the group. He really helps us out in the middle by taking wickets. Have a three to four day gap; must maintain the standard set by the previous couple of games.
Australia recently had the worst spot in the standings, but after two victories, they have moved up to the top four! In contrast, Pakistan started with two victories before suffering back-to-back defeats. At the Chinnaswamy, it was a run-fest today, as it so frequently is. Shaheen Afridi and Adam Zampa put in noteworthy performances, despite the pitch not having much to offer the bowlers. Even Josh Hazlewood, who only managed to take one wicket, was excellent. However, it was the opening stand of 259 by Warner and Marsh that really helped Australia get off to a great start. Pakistan began playing catch-up cricket after that, which they did admirably but ultimately failed to do. So that's all I have to say. I hope you liked our reporting. It's goodbye until we meet again.
