In the wake of the mass shooting on Wednesday at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus that left at least three people dead, LeBron James called it "senseless" that nothing changes when it comes to gun control in the US.
Certainly, James said in a press conference at T-Mobile Arena prior to his Los Angeles Lakers' matchup with the New Orleans Pelicans in the inaugural in-season tournament semifinals on Thursday. "He told me to be safe out here because he heard about the shooting at UNLV," James' brother from back home texted him. "Let me start by expressing my sympathies to the families who have lost loved ones, as well as to friends and family in general.
It simply reiterates what I already stated regarding weapons in America. It seems like a much longer conversation, yet every time it occurs, we are dealing with the same story and having the same conversation. It is absolutely absurd that someone can obtain a pistol and that they can carry out these actions repeatedly with no consequences. The fact that innocent people keep dying on college campuses, in classrooms, at shopping centers, at movie theaters, and in other places defies logic. It's absurd.
It's really been simpler to be able to own a firearm because nothing has changed. It's foolish.
The NBA issued a statement regarding the shooting later on Wednesday.
The statement said, "Today's senseless shooting at UNLV has left the NBA family heartbroken." We offer the entire Las Vegas community, as well as the families and friends of the victims, our deepest sympathies.
According to a source who spoke to News8.in , the league is also organizing a moment of silence prior to Thursday's semifinals, although this week's schedule isn't expected to be affected.
The attack on Wednesday at approximately 11:45 a.m. PT sent police swarming onto the campus as students and faculty barricaded themselves inside classrooms and dorm rooms. It happened just a few miles from the Strip and the scene of the 2017 massacre that left hundreds of country music fans dead and 60 people injured.
About forty minutes after the initial reports of an active shooter, the authorities declared the area safe. According to Adam Garcia, a campus police official, the deceased suspect was located and "engaged" by the cops. How the suspect passed away was not immediately apparent.
Details regarding the victims, the culprit, and a potential motive were not immediately disclosed by the police.
James has long been an outspoken supporter of gun reform and control, joining a growing chorus of NBA players, such as Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, who have voiced their support for the nation's gun laws to be changed in the wake of numerous mass shootings.
The Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers will face the Lakers in the second of two semifinal matches.
In just three quarters of action, Luka Doncic finished with 40 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. On Wednesday night, the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Utah Jazz 147-97, and Doncic scored his first-ever triple-double in the first half of the game.
With his 60th triple-double of his career, Doncic overtook Larry Bird and took sole control of ninth place on the all-time career chart.
Pretty wonderful," remarked Doncic, who just a few days after becoming a parent for the first time wore a tiny headband for the first time. Since everyone is aware of Larry Bird, this is truly unique.
Doncic made 14 of 25 field goals and 6 of 12 three-pointers. Playing 32 minutes, he went a little over his average for each game.
With that, Luka set the tone, making basket after basket after basket, according to Tim Hardaway Jr. I anticipated that he would go 50-20-20.
Doncic had 29 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists entering the last 1:30 of the second quarter. With 1:11 remaining, after Keyonte George missed a free throw, he collected a rebound. After he lofted a pass inside to Dereck Lively II, his dunk resulted in his tenth assist twelve seconds later.
The American Airlines Center television boards showed the players' real-time statistics, so the crowd was keeping track of Doncic's progress and cheered when Lively dunk. It was the NBA's first-ever triple-double with 25 points in the first half.
In the latter minutes of the half, Doncic acknowledged that he was aware of his figures as well.
He remarked, "I was going for the [assist on the] final field goal."
The Mavericks scored their most points of the season, falling two points short of their highest-scoring game in regulation history.
One point separated Dallas' 52-point advantage in the final minutes from the franchise record, which was achieved in a 123-70 victory over Philadelphia in November 2014. At the free throw line, the Mavericks shot a season-high 55.4%.
They started the game ahead of the NBA, averaging 15.9 3-pointers per contest, and they made 22 of their 49 tries.
It was also the Jazz's second-worst loss as a team, trailed only by a 56-point loss to Milwaukee (158-102) in March 1979.
Jazz coach Will Hardy described that performance as utterly appalling. From beginning to end, it appeared as though the Mavericks were playing at a faster speed than we were.
In twenty minutes, Doncic shot 10-of-17 from the field and 6-of-10 from 3-point range to close out the first half.
In 349 games during the regular season, Doncic has recorded 60 triple-doubles. Bird performed 897.
For Dallas, Kyrie Irving scored 26 points. The Mavericks were without their top guards for their previous two games—Doncic (Friday against Memphis due to a childbirth) and Irving (Saturday against Oklahoma City due to a foot injury)—both of which were losses at home.
With 21 points, Ochai Agbaji led the Jazz. Leading scorers Jordan Clarkson and Lauri Markkanen were absent for Utah's game.
Additionally its top rebounder, Markkanen, has missed six straight games due to a hamstring injury. Due to a thigh injury, Clarkson missed his fourth game in five.
With 10 losses on the road in 11 games this season, the Jazz lead the NBA in road losses.
After both clubs were eliminated from the NBA's inaugural in-season tournament, the game was added to the schedule last week. Every squad arrived after three days off.
On Wednesday night, Joel Embiid led the Philadelphia 76ers to a 131-126 victory over the Washington Wizards with a season-high 50 points and 13 rebounds.
Embiid scored 50 points in his career for the sixth time. On November 13, 2022, he scored 59 against Utah, a career-high.
The current NBA MVP shot 19 of 24 from the floor, making two 3-pointers, and converting 11 of 13 foul shots. After missing two games due to illness, he returned and in just over 38 minutes, he had seven assists and six mistakes.
Embiid stated, "I felt like it was one of those nights where I had to be aggressive and get it going." Sometimes your team needs you to be a playmaker, and other times they need you to score. However, they consistently made the right moves and passes, and I simply finished them.
Tyrese Maxey contributed seven assists in addition to 26 points.
About Embiid's night, Maxey remarked that he should have had sixty.
"It was almost fifty," fellow player De'Anthony Melton said. He was shooting the ball and scoring with ease as he went across the field.
With 23 points, Washington was led by Jordan Poole. Wizards record: 3–17.
In a game that saw 22 substitutions and 13 ties, the Wizards opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run to grab the lead after trailing 99-95. However, with 8:48 left, the 76ers led 102-101 and managed to extend their lead to eight points.
With 2:17 left, Poole's 3-pointer brought Washington within a point, but that was as close as the Wizards would get.
Overall, I felt that tonight's effort and overall goal were better. The defensive attitude was superior, according to Wes Unseld Jr., the Wizards coach.
With 2:36 left in the third, Embiid was penalized for traveling; as a result, he slammed the ball down, earning a technical foul and helping Washington increase their lead to 95-89. Embiid's annoyance, though, served as a catalyst, and Philadelphia went on a 10-0 run to close the quarter.
He serves as both our offensive and defensive safety valve. He's the MVP because of this, Melton stated. He plays great defense to make up for a lot of our errors, and when the going gets tough, he can come through with some big shots.
Melton led Philadelphia with eighteen points. Following an 11-game absence due to a vehicle strike on November 11 during a hit-and-run incident in downtown Philadelphia, Kyle Oubre Jr. made his comeback. After 19 minutes, he had 12 points.
The 76ers coach, Nick Nurse, admitted that he was a little concerned about him. Although his second half was excellent, I was concerned about him at the break and what kind of rotation I would utilize with him. He seemed like the spark with a lot of things, which made me really happy.
For Washington, Tyus Jones scored twenty points, Daniel Gafford added eighteen, while Kyle Kuzma and Corey Kispert each scored sixteen.
