The Kansas City Chiefs scored 31 points on Sunday, matching their second-highest output of the season, but Patrick Mahomes didn't think it was the key offensive statistic.
When it came to the Chiefs' turnovers and dropped passes, Mahomes was more pleased with the numbers zero and one. Although the Chiefs haven't been able to replicate their offensive prowess from past seasons for the majority of the year, Mahomes said he always felt that if the team improved as much as they did on Sunday, good things would come.
The Chiefs' offensive potential has been hampered by [turnovers], drops, and my inability to go to the right player at the right moment, as we have demonstrated," Mahomes stated.
Small things like that have caused some of our drives to stall. This week, we kind of went back to the basics and didn't stop trying. It's clear that we made progress in the right way presently. Let's simply keep doing that for the remainder of the season.
After the Chiefs have fallen behind by ten or more points, Mahomes won his 15th game in the NFL. In these types of games, his victory percentage of 58 is the highest in NFL history.
However, the Chiefs had yet to come back from a double-digit deficit this year. The Chiefs appeared to be already in trouble when they fell behind 14-0 early in the second quarter, since they have a history of losing when they trail by any considerable amount.
That was prior to one of the Chiefs' potentially most significant touchdown drives of the season, a 71-yard drive led by Mahomes. The Chiefs had gained 13 yards on seven plays ran up to that point.
Getting that first touchdown drive was important for us because it somewhat turned the tide in our favor, Mahomes remarked.
To seize control of the game, the Chiefs proceeded to score touchdowns on three of the following four possessions. The Chiefs scored their first points of the game in the latter two quarters in two of those touchdowns, which occurred in the second half of their previous four games. Rashee Rice, a rookie, gained 107 yards and eight catches. In a regular season game, he is the first wide receiver for the Chiefs to surpass 100 yards since Week 7 of the previous campaign. The NFL's longest current run was twenty games.
The highlight play of the game for Rice came on a 39-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, which helped loosen up a close contest. for breaking an attempted tackle close to the end zone and making the reception at the 35, Rice ran for the ball.
The Chiefs had been waiting for this game from any of their wide outs, and it finally arrived from the second-round draft pick. Honestly, I think we've hardly touched the surface when it comes to Rice, Mahomes remarked. I believe you see us hitting him primarily in the vicinity of the line of scrimmage, but he is capable of some vertical threat plays and has bursts of speed.
We're going to keep pushing him to be that receiver every single week because we think he has a shot to be a great receiver in this league.
The Cleveland Browns' injury list is still growing after quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson suffered a concussion during their 29–12 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
Myles Garrett, a standout pass-rusher for the Browns, reported feeling a pop in his shoulder during the game in addition to Thompson-Robinson's injury. Trainers in the Cleveland team's dressing room had to help Garrett put his shirt on and then put his shoulder in a sling.
After the Browns depart for Los Angeles, Garrett stated he will have his shoulder evaluated. The Browns will rehearse there this week rather than returning to Cleveland in preparation for their game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
Garrett remarked, "I'm not coming out unless it's falling off—it's already falling off." referring to the shoulder. I share the same desire to win as the other guys. I'm giving them everything I have, regardless of how I'm feeling.
Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward, the other great defensive player for the Browns in Denver, was sidelined due to a shoulder injury and did not participate. A hard hit to his ribs caused star wide receiver Amari Cooper to leave the game on Sunday in the second half as well, though X-rays revealed nothing wrong, according to Browns coach Kevin Stefanski.
Meanwhile, Thompson-Robinson was starting for the third time in his career in place of quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is sidelined for the whole campaign due to a shoulder injury. Watson had surgery last week after breaking his throwing shoulder during a victory over the Baltimore Ravens on November 12.
Following a protracted third-down scramble, Thompson-Robinson sustained a concussion in the third quarter of play. He tried a rolling right pass, but Denver linebacker Baron Browning struck him high as he was throwing.
Browning was given a flag by officials for roughing the quarterback. It took Thompson-Robinson a few minutes to stand up before he was escorted to the injury tent. Even though Walker took over on Sunday, 38-year-old Joe Flacco, who signed with Cleveland last week, gives the Browns another quarterback option going ahead. While playing with the Baltimore Ravens, Flacco was awarded the MVP of Super Bowl XLVII.
Flacco stated, "I definitely believe I can still play," prior to the start of his first Browns practice on Wednesday. I will put my all into whatever character I end up playing and wherever this takes me.
When asked if Flacco could start in Thompson-Robinson's place if he is ruled out of the Rams game due to a concussion, Stefanski remained silent. Later, Stefanski responded, "Let's see how he does this week with the protocol," in response to a question about whether Thompson-Robinson will continue to start for Cleveland as quarterback if he passes the concussion protocol.
Thompson-Robinson was selected by the Browns in the fifth round of the UCLA draft. Prior to the injury, he had completed 14 of 29 passes for 134 yards and a score. In the Browns' 13-10 triumph over the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, he guided the team on the drive for the game-winning field goal.
Running back Joe Mixon was not blamed for the Bengals' 16-10 loss against the Steelers on Sunday, according to coach Zac Taylor.
On eight carries, Mixon was only able to gain 16 yards. The team's third straight loss and first game with quarterback Jake Browning starting in place of the injured Joe Burrow—who is sidelined for the season due to a ruptured ligament in his right wrist came with the lack of production.
When asked how confident he was in Mixon, Taylor stood up for his seasoned running back.
According to Taylor, this has nothing to do with Joe Mixon. This is how the unit as a whole comes together.
This isn't about one person, please. From what I could see, it's not like there were any lost opportunities there. He's still got it, and this season he's given us what we needed.
NFL Next Gen Stats indicates that Mixon finished with -16 run yards over expectation, which is his second-worst total in that area this season. Mixon gained 20 yards less in the team's victory over Buffalo in Week 9 than the NFL Next Gen model had predicted for his carries.
Against the Steelers (7-4), who won their first game since dismissing offensive coordinator Matt Canada, Cincinnati's offense managed just one score.
In his first NFL start, Browning completed 19 of 26 passes for 227 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. In the defeat, Mixon had two receptions for 44 yards.
Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan stated last week that he hopes to see consistency from the rushing attack.
Callahan stated last week that it's difficult to keep passing it off if you only do it once or twice and nothing changes. Then, though, you'll pop one for ten or twelve yards. So, the most important thing about it would be consistency.
Cincinnati's quarterback switch made stopping Mixon a priority, according to Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. Tomlin, who hailed Pittsburgh's strong run defense for the second straight week after the team gave up 96 rushing yards to Cleveland the week before, added, "It really puts an emphasis on the run game." I'm grateful that we put a lot of effort into it.
In a run play, Cincinnati will let its quarterback audible in or out based on the defensive alignment that is shown prior to the snap. According to Browning, he handled every circumstance versus Pittsburgh correctly.
Browning acknowledged that the defense benefits from a one-dimensional attack, but he wouldn't attribute Sunday's defeat on the ground game.
Indeed, that does make things challenging, but Browning said it wasn't really his main focus. I must concentrate on improving in the pass game.
Mixon's total of 16 rushing yards was the lowest since he gained just two yards in a 27-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7 of the 2019 season.
On Sunday, Mixon's carries were all on first or second down. His longest carry was four yards, and he only gained one yard on half of his efforts.
According to Browning, an offense's ability to flourish is often hampered by inefficiency on first downs, especially in the AFC North.
It's going to be hard anytime you get behind the sticks, Browning said, especially in this division with all the really excellent defenses and pass rushers.
Mixon changed the terms of his deal this offseason to provide the Bengals more financial leeway. The Roster Management System indicates that the 2021 Pro Bowler will cost $8.5 million this season due to the salary cap.
According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Mixon is ranked 21st among qualifying running backs this year in projected points added per carry. A career-high 41.9% of Mixon's carries this season have gone above the expected amount. This percentage is also marginally higher than the 38.4% league average for running backs with at least 100 carries this season.
However, in a third straight defeat on Sunday, Mixon and the Bengals offense were unable to muster much of anything.
"They did a good job being better than us today," Orlando Brown, an offensive tackle with the Bengals, said.
