Goal-shy On Monday, Chelsea discovered their cutting edge, scoring twice in 82 seconds to defeat Fulham 2-0 and lift their spirits. Mykhailo Mudryk also scored his first goal for the team.
Only two points and five goals separated Mauricio Pochettino's injury-riddled club from the relegation zone when they traveled to the home of their near neighbors.
Early missed opportunities suggested recurring shortcomings, but in the 18th minute, Ukrainian winger Mudryk scored his first goal for Chelsea and Armando Broja quickly increased the advantage.
Chelsea's victory lifts them up to the middle of the league and releases pressure on new manager Pochettino after three straight Premier League games without a goal.
The former manager of Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain demanded the ruthless goal scoring, and his team's quick first-half double allayed his concerns.
Pochettino told Sky Sports that the team needed to have more self-assurance and faith.
"The players gave a great performance, and we ultimately received what we deserved," I said.
In the Premier League on Monday, Chelsea defeated their neighbors Fulham 2-0. Mykhailo Mudryk scored the team's first goal, and Armando Broja also found the net to mark his full recovery from an injury.
Before their trip to Craven Cottage, Mauricio Pochettino's exorbitant team had only scored five goals in six league games this season and had failed to score in their previous three league games.
But they took charge of the West London derby in the first two minutes of the game. Before the hosts' shoddy defense allowed Broja to score in the eighteenth minute, Ukraine winger Mudryk chest down a cross from Levi Colwill and slotted the ball past Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
While Broja was making his first start since suffering a knee injury at the end of 2022, Mudryk scored his first goal since joining Chelsea nine months prior. Nicolas Jackson was suspended. After an hour, he was replaced, and with Chelsea's medical staff's assistance, he walked off gingerly.
It's an amazing sensation. TalkSPORT spoke with Broja about his long-term objective. As a team, we're clicking. That won't occur immediately.
We need that time in order to continue developing as a team.
After Mudryk also took a knock, Ian Maatsen entered the game as a substitute at halftime and nearly made it three for Chelsea when he struck the crossbar in the 62nd minute. The visitors went on to win just their second league game of the year.
Chelsea now sits at number eight on the points table, eight points ahead of Fulham, who is currently in 13th place, thanks to the outcome.
The performance was outstanding; it had far too many positive and excellent aspects. A relieved Pochettino stated, "We need to keep working and believing." The team today ultimately achieved our desired outcome because there was belief present. These days, it's all about working extremely hard, being ruthless, and coming up with better solutions.
With several other important players already out injured, Pochettino downplayed concerns that Broja, Moises Caicedo, and Enzo Fernandez might have sustained new injuries. However, he did mention that Mudryk had experienced a thigh issue at the end of the first half.
Marco Silva, the coach of Fulham, bemoaned the "soft goals" his team had given up to the visitors.
He pointed out that it made for an extremely challenging situation for us and the ideal one for Chelsea.
The Portuguese coach denied rumors that his team was lacking Serbian forward Aleksandar Mitrovic's offensive prowess, claiming he was only considering his current group of players. Mitrovic joined the Saudi club Al-Hilal in August.
With a brilliant move in the eighteenth minute, Mudryk scored his first goal since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk for £88.5 million. He did this by controlling Levi Colwill's cross with his chest.
After defeating Luton on August 25, Chelsea had not scored in the Premier League until a mere 20 seconds later, when Armando Broja, making his first start in 11 months, bunded the ball into the net following Tim Ream's attempted tackle.
While Fulham attempted to rally in the second half, Chelsea defended valiantly. However, their evening was marred by setbacks as top scorers Moises Caicedo hobbled off in stoppage time and Broja was also substituted due to apparent injury concerns.
After Chelsea's disappointing start to the season, Pochettino downplayed those injury fears, instead celebrating a victory that moves Chelsea up to 11th place and may mark a turning point. While Fulham is still in 13th place.
Chelsea's long-overdue victory
Due to injuries and suspensions, Chelsea entered the match with just eleven players. Raheem Sterling was also forced to start on the bench because of a virus, but they got off to a strong start and quickly got their reward.
After a challenging beginning to the game, in which he dribbled the ball out of play and fired a wild shot over, Mudryk scored his goal in a spectacular fashion, receiving Colwill's left-wing cross on his chest and finishing low through Bernd Leno's legs.
When Cole Palmer intercepted Ream's careless pass to feed Broja in Chelsea's second goal, Fulham's defense was even worse. Ream's attempted recovery tackle was then deflected off the Chelsea striker and into the net.
After losing both games to Chelsea last season, Fulham never really seemed to be able to recover from that double blow. Chelsea dominated the first half, with Conor Gallagher being the game's best player. Fulham had previously taken four points from their West London rivals.
Substitutes Alex Iwobi and Carlos Vinicius both had half-chances as the hosts improved after the break, but they were only able to create one real opportunity, and Robert Sanchez was equal to it.
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino stated to Sky Sports: "It's critical that we increase our self-assurance and faith in ourselves." The players gave a fantastic performance, and I'm thrilled for them because we ultimately received what we were due.
He remarked after Mudryk scored the team's first goal: "It's crucial for offensive players to score a goal." He had good health. He felt something in his quad at halftime, which was unfortunate for him, but hopefully it's not a major problem and he'll be fine for the weekend. I'm overjoyed for both goal scorers.
When asked about his development once more during his press conference, Mudryk responded, "It's about maturity, adaptation." It's important for us to realize that every young person needs time to adjust.
When he came here, it was a huge adjustment for him. It's difficult to fit in when you join a team because, to be honest, there are too many inexperienced players on a weak squad.
They do not represent the icing on the cake. It's challenging for them to bring something new to the team in order to construct something significant, but they just need to be patient and have faith in these guys.
It's a big task that requires tiny, incremental steps. Although patience is something we value, sometimes people lack it. We maintained our composure and optimism even when we were losing.
Regarding Caicedo's apparent wound, he stated: Caicedo has a contusion, which is a bruise. We're hoping it's not much. Despite the contusion, he was exhausted.
