In the ongoing ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 in Ekana Sports City in Lucknow, Sri Lanka, captained by Kusal Mendis, defeated the Netherlands by 5 wickets with 10 balls remaining on October 21 to record their first victory.
Earlier, Scott Edwards' Netherlands team, batting first, amassed 262 runs in 49.5 overs before being bowled out. Sybrand Engelbrecht (70) and Logan van Beek (59) led the Dutch team in scoring.
Maheesh Theekshana claimed one wicket, while Dilshan Madushanka and Kasun Rajitha each claimed four for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan batters started slowly but built up speed as they pursued a target of 263 runs. But they lost three batters in quick succession. Sadeera Samarawickrama (91*), and Pathum Nissanka (54) and Charith Asalanka (44) formed a solid partnership that helped Sri Lanka defeat The Netherlands by 5 wickets.
As a result, Sri Lanka gained ground and is now ranked ninth with two points in the ICC points standings. They are below the Dutch squad despite defeating them because of the differential in Net Run Rate (NRR). SL has only won one of their four games thus far.
The Dutch team defeated South Africa by 38 runs on October 17 in their previous game, causing the second major upset of the tournament. In 43 overs, they scored 245/8 after they batted first, but the Proteas were all out at 207. Now that they have played three games, the Netherlands has won one and lost two.
On the other hand, despite their best efforts, Sri Lanka has lost each of the first three games. Australia won their previous match against Sri Lanka by a margin of 5 wickets.
After five One-Day Internationals (ODIs) between the Netherlands and Sri Lanka, the Dutch have not been able to overcome Sri Lanka even once. Sri Lanka defeated this squad by 128 runs when they played earlier in July 2023.

Live NED vs SL: SL defeats NED by 5 wickets to claim its first victory of the competition
Despite dropping five wickets, Sri Lanka defeated The Netherlands by five wickets in the tenth over of their ICC Men's ODI World Cup match at Lucknow. In 48.2 overs, Sri Lankan batsmen successfully chased down a 263-run target.
After three straight losses, Sadeera Samarawickrama leads Sri Lanka to their first victory of the competition with an unbeaten 91. He walked into a pressure situation where two wickets had been lost for only 52, and Nissanka was dismissed a few overs later after failing to continue after his fifty yet again. However, Samawickrama and Asalanka's partnership of 77 helped Sri Lanka's ship remain afloat. The pitch had a lot of turn, and Aryan Dutt once again excelled for the Netherlands. In fact, he ended that fourth-wicket partnership in his final over by dismissing Asalanka, who simply couldn't help himself after a few dot balls and went for the big shot. Samarawickrama, however, remained unwavering at the crease and continued after raising his fifty. On a pitch that demanded it of the batters, the No. 4 batted with composure. The Netherlands put up a valiant fight, but it wasn't enough today. They did a great job of turning it into a game in the first place after falling behind 91–6 earlier.
Player of the Match: Sadeera Samarawickrama Thrilled to win the game for my team. I was really excited to win a game for my team because we needed one and we hadn't played well in the previous three games. My strategy was to bat deep and play the most number of overs possible despite the difficult wicket, spinning ball, and accurate line and length bowling from the pacers. I followed my fundamentals correctly, and as a result, I was successful. I planned for others to bat deep and informed them that we couldn't chase this total in 40 overs because I knew it would be difficult later on due to the turning and gripping wicket.
Scott Edwards | Captain of the Netherlands: We obviously got off to a bad start. I believed that we reached a fairly competitive total. Our first 30 overs were simply unsuccessful. too many boundary balls were lost. also didn't field that well. Our top order and our bowlers let us down today, despite the fact that they have been strong for us throughout the tournament. I'm not sure if we would change too drastically. Simply looking to improve execution. I had a hunch that it would change later. Compared to other spinners, Aryan turns it slightly more frequently. He was a phenomenal bowler. We haven't quite found our batting rhythm yet. Too many starts, but I haven't really taken off. Neither way (batting first or second) really matters not overly worried the toss.
Kusal Mendis | Captain of Sri Lanka: Happy to have won our first World Cup game today. In the first 10 overs, the bowlers did well. The bowling of Rajitha and Dilshan was excellent. 280 might have been sufficient for this pitch. At the very end, it was turning. Sadeera played excellent batting. I removed Rajitha because there were only three overs left in the game. The bats of Sadeera and Asalanka were excellent. a lot of good things.
The disappointment was evident in Scott Edwards' interview. He thought 260 was a good total and that the bowling wasn't as good as it had been the day before against South Africa. The spinners received a ton of assistance, and Aryan Dutt was outstanding. However, the pacers and the rest of them leaked far too many freebies. However, Sri Lanka would likely feel relieved after recording their first victory. To make a case for the top four, they'll need to get on a bit of a roll from here. There is a ton of labor to do. That concludes this one. When England's pursuit begins at the Wankhede, you can switch to our coverage. Cheers!
